How to Lick An Octopus

July 19, 2011

Food, Japan

Baby octopus on a stick make for a great little snack

Yes, that’s right folks. You can lick your very own octopus… on a stick. I was tickled pink when we passed these during our wander through the Nishiki-koji street market in Kyoto. I’m not a big fan of octopus generally, but even these tempted me. Sadly, I was too chicken to give them a try.

These meaty pops were meant to be eaten on the road

Mike did venture off to grab some octopus balls from a little stand and shared them will Dek, while I snapped pictures of all of the incredible food surrounding us. Most of the ingredients I had no idea what to do with. That doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate them though.

I was very disappointed the next day when I missed the perfect photo moment. We were cutting through the street market when  I saw a little boy munching away on an octopus lollipop. I didn’t want to freak his parents out by stalking him to get a good shot either. It was nice to see that locals do eat these though. They aren’t just put out for the tourists.

Those octopus look delicious (really!). I wonder what gives them the reddish color?

Those are too cute! But I don’t think I could bring myself to lick on ‘em either.

No way I would have eaten that. But, I’m not very brave.
