On a quiet October day in 2012 my friend and I drove our four kids, all under the age of five, up to San Marino for the day. This microstate on the Italian peninsula was a quick 2+ hour drive from our home base in the city of Ferrara, Italy. The skies were a bit overcast, but we had no idea that the fog was about to roll in. It certainly made for some interesting images, and definitely cut off the view of the Mediterranean Sea we should have been able to see from the castle walls. Lack of view aside, we still had a blast exploring the city’s two castles, Castellos Della Cesta and Guaita, more commonly known as two of the Three Towers of San Marino.

It amazes me that you are both keeping an eye on all those little kids and still take such beautiful photos. It looks like a scenic day out.

Forget the view, the castle looks fabulous and I love that you have shown them in B&W.

You certainly made the most of your foggy day–photographically speaking. Choosing the sepia tone to show them is perfect. We got to San Marino, but unfortunately rushed out before visiting the castle. I particularly love the “stairway to nowhere”.

Love the sepia tone – gives your photos an ethereal feel.
A great way to spend a day with or without kids. I suspect your friend kept an eye on all of them while you photographed?

Wow, I’ve never been to one of Europe’s little gems! I’m so glad I looked at your pictures. . . They are wonderful. This castle looks like its right out of the movies. I won’t miss San Marino when I’m in the area.

Love the photos – sometimes something like these have far more impact than color. Nice package tour today and one that will go on my future’s list!

I have never been to San Marino which is a shame for me being Italian. The photos you posted are simply beautiful and makes me regret not having gone there, at least not yet.

The fog is pretty in the photos, but too bad you didn’t have a clearer day. It looks like a fantastic place to explore.

Beautiful photos – and I love that they are in black and white! My favourite is the one of Dek checking out the water fountain – Emma is fascinated by those in Europe too!

You two look like you are having a wonderful time. The B & W treatment on these photos is excellent; perfect with the fog and the stone buildings.

The black & white bring out the starkness of the large buildings. Makes them look as historic as they are.
