Friday Postcards from the Royal Maestranza de Caballeria de Ronda

Ronda

Kids find the most wonderful places to play when you are exploring, don’t they? While touring the town of Ronda for a few days during our road trip around the Andalusia region of Spain, my boys constantly reminded me of this fact, but never more so than when we went to visit the bullring.

Mike and I took the boys to the Royal Maestranza de Caballeria de Ronda, the town’s centuries old bullring, on our second morning. I mean come on! Bulls charging bull fighters. Swords and a big ring. What could be more fun for kids? Apparently anything according to my boys.

To say the boys were not impressed may be an understatement.

The horse outside set up for pictures couldn’t grab their interest. They certainly weren’t excited about the dark museum with posters, costumes and swords. Really boys?! Not even the swords! I figured these would at least excite Dek, who loves to talk about samurai, ninjas, knights and swords. But alas no, not until we entered the actual bullring did the boys start having fun.

Just as the bullfighters hid from the bull to catch their breath, so did my boys in the narrow space that blocked the bull from the fighter. Back and forth they went running after each other. They giggled with glee as my husband peeked over the top to “find” them. The boys played tag and saw who could move the fastest through. It was an unexpected playground in what could have been a very boring adventure for the boys.

Let this be a lesson to all parents– even when we think we have found something cool for our kids they may not be into it. Then again, let your kids surprise you with what they find to play with.

So true! Glad the boys had a lot of fun and such precious photos for you to remember it. Love the look of mischief and joy in that first photo.

Mischief and Joy seem to be the story of my life these days, but my boys certainly are precious…. when they aren’t driving me nuts Mary 😉

What an exciting place for your boys to play!

Beautiful photos! Spontaneity is the name of the game with the kiddos! xo

Your post brings back great memories of our trip to Spain and Ronda. My daughter and husband had a lot of fun playing in the ring. In fact, one of my favorite photos from the trip shows him bent over with his “horns” chasing after my daughter. It was hot and dusty and my husband was petrified of the gorge but Ronda is still one of my favorite places.

From the very first picture I have recognized Arena from Ronda, the paintings on the wooden walls are so characteristic!

Looks like they had a great time! Thanks for linking up to Travel Photo Thursday!
