Lake Charles, Louisiana is a superb weekend retreat for a couple or some friends. History and entertainment, fine dining, a craft brewery and lots of entertainment options abound. Nobody offers finer hospitality than the incomparable L’Auberge Casino and Resort. With over 1000 rooms, there’s space for all – and featuring a casino, festive shopping, an array of dining options and a pool and spa, and you may actually find yourself never leaving the property.
Welcome to the L’Auberge Casino and Resort
The gracious grand lobby is designed to impress with a soaring ceiling and two expansive fireplaces anchoring the space. L’Bar is a craft cocktail bar located just off the fireplaces, and an excellent idea at any time of the day. Bloody Marys and mimosas in the early afternoon, local brews, a glass of wine or a proper daiquiri before the evening’s entertainment, or a nightcap before bed – the staff at L’Bar was always happy to create something special.
Rooms at the L’Auberge Casino and Resort
The spacious suites include:
- large bathrooms
- a pod coffeemaker
- a mini fridge
- a flat screen tv
- a seating area
Most interesting to me? The amazing cloud-soft mattress and pillows were o so welcoming. After a soundless first night’s sleep, I wanted to re-write my entire agenda to include one thing only– sleep.
The rooms were delightful, making it terribly difficult to motivate out of bed. But motivate I did, down to the pool and spa!

The outdoor pool is actually three separate components, including a swimming area with a walk-in-beach feature, ideal for small children; two or three hot tubs (I lost track of how many I saw, wandering around!) and a lazy river. Criss crossed with bridges and landscaped with pockets of privacy, the pool area feels like a caribbean retreat.
There is an adults only area, featuring a hotter hot tub, a quiet swimming pool and private cabanas. There’s also a waterfront sand beach area with loungers, a volleyball net and sand toys for the kids to enjoy!
Service is great: from coffee and light snacks to full bar offerings, I was only regretful that the weather wasn’t warm enough for me enjoy the various lounges all day.

Dining at L’Auberge Casino and Resort
All this pampering will make you hungry, and L’Auberge has a full array of options, from the grab and go Modern Pantry to Beaucoup Buffet and Asia. The pinnacle is Ember Grille and Wine Bar, a shockingly delicious modern steakhouse with a super wine list.
The Ahi Tuna Tartare was accented with cucumber carpaccio, shaved thin with perfect avocado and a drizzle of yuzu. The genius Salad Flight featured a perfect crispy Wedge made with creamy bleu d’Auvergne. Lamb lollichops – a single rib cut, perfectly broiled with a mint raita side, was tender and juicy.
But nothing compares to the main event: the signature “Tomahawk” cut. This 42oz (that’s right, forty two ounce) bone in rib eye steak, carved tableside – melting off the bone, this steak was the nearest to perfection I’ve ever encountered. Complemented with a spicy pinot noir, and sides of truffled mac and cheese and buttery mashed potatoes, the meal at Ember was worth the trip alone.
After dancing a bit to the rolicking band at the Jack Daniels Salon, I retreated back to my room to find a delightful turndown service: fresh baked cookies and milk, perfect for a tuck in and a deep sleep in the most comfortable bed I remember.
