Lounging in the Champagne Pond of Kapoho

Just past our rental on the Big Island of Hawaii is a natural wonder locals and vacationers alike flock to. The Champagne Pond in Kapoho is a protected inlet of heated fresh-water and a temporary home to fish and turtles that cruise in from the ocean making it a prime snorkeling spot.

Bring your water shoes as this is not a smooth sand beach. Lava rocks in every shape and size litter the beach and bottom of the pond. We entered towards the front, near the ocean, where the slope was a bit gentler for Dek to enter; if you want warmer water head to the back of the pond. Babies and toddlers should have life vests handy, if not on, at all times. The water can drop off quick.

Even if you are just strolling by it is worth a stop to pop your toes in the water. Watch the waves crash off shore. Enjoy a quiet moment to reflect on just how beautiful and serene this part of the island is, and how much fun you and your family are having. There is still a lot more to do and see, but for this one moment, take the peace and quiet while you can.

We were on the Big Island for 2 weeks. We were on the west side in Kona for the 1st week and then on the east side staying just south of Hilo for the 2nd week. It was amazing! And definitely a great way to see all sides of the island.
