Pack Up That Audio Book for Your Next Road Trip
Road trip season is in full swing. The kids are out of school and people are hitting the highway to visit family, take in a few historical sights and traipse through some of the country’s national parks and playgrounds this week. AAA is predicting a rise in travel compared to recent years as people take advantage of the mid-week holiday and extend the festivities into the weekend.
Not to be left out, we will also be hitting the road for a few days of wandering down the Oregon coast and eating our way through Portland. We’ve never done a road trip with the kids. This should be interesting.
Bring on the Entertainment
Dek is a notoriously bad car passenger. We usually have to whip out a DVD just to have some peace and quiet. This trip it will not be an option. At all.
Our strategy is simple. We will be taking a lot of breaks, look at flashcards, learn some Italian and listen to a whole lot of books on CD; one of the few tried and true ways to keep Dek entertained for more than 2 minutes.
It’s perfect. Dek gets to hold the book and flip through the pictures, while the narrator reads the story to us all. I don’t need risk bodily injury by twisting around in the front seat to read to him. An added bonus is that I won’t get car sick by having to look backwards.
What’s on Our Play List?
We have a little Curious George and Dr. Seuss all lined up. If we get desperate we have Harry Potter to get Dek to sleep.
Our latest family favorite is the Scrambled States of America. This quirky children’s book tells the tale of the first annual states party. During the celebration they all decide to swap spots to see what it’s like to live in other parts of the country. As you can imagine a little chaos ensures.
Kids (and adults for that matter) will learn a few fun facts about the states while getting a geography lesson at the same time. The illustrations are bursting with bright colors and goofy characters. I can’t think of a better book to bring on our family road trip this summer.

Note: My opinions are my own. Although MacMillan Audio sent me a list of books in their catalog and are hosting this giveaway I am under no obligation to give a favorable review of any of their books. Books are in my blood and we genuinely enjoyed this book borrowed from the library and then later bought for our home library.
