The Fairest by Marissa Meyer, a book review
Mirror Mirror on the wall. We’ve all heard those five little words before, but never from the lips of a character like Queen Levana, the villain in Marissa Meyer’s best selling series The Lunar Chronicles.
If you aren’t familiar with the Lunar Chronicles, here is a quick recap. The entire series is a retelling of famous fairytales. Cinder (book 1) is a retelling of Cinderella set in an earth of the future that has been devastated by disease. Long past wars have divided the world into massive nations, instead of many smaller nations as we know today in the 21st century. There is a steampunk vibe to the cultures you meet as the characters wander across the globe looking for answers. Each book tells the tale of one of our heroines- Cinder/ Cinderella, Scarlett/ Little Red Riding Hood, Cress/ Rapunzel and Winter/ Snow White. Naturally there is one evil queen bringing all of these characters together as their stories interweave throughout the series.
In The Fairest, a 272- page novella, we dive into the evil Queen Levana’s past. What events could possibly have led to the woman she is today? What about that sister and where did Cinder, the series’ heroine come from anyway? Most importantly, we got a glimpse at a very young Winter, the title character in Meyer’s final chapter of the Lunar Chronicles coming out in the fall of 2015.
Why do I love it? I don’t want to give too much away, but this book explained a lot of little quirks about the queen. Through Meyer’s other books in the series (Cinder, Scarlet and Cress), Meyer drops hints about the queen’s past, but I always wondered when they would be revealed. Finally I have some answers. And that’s all I’m going to say.
Publisher’s Synopsis: Pure evil has a name, hides behind a mask of deceit, and uses her “glamour” to gain power. But who is Queen Levana? Long before she crossed paths with Cinder, Scarlet, and Cress in The Lunar Chronicles, Levana lived a very different story—a story that has never been told . . . until now.
Marissa Meyer spins yet another unforgettable tale about love and war, deceit and death. This extraordinary book includes full-color art and an excerpt from WINTER, the next book in the Lunar Chronicles series.
