The Man Made of Stars by M.H.Clark, a book review

The-Man-Made-of-Stars-COVER-200-wideHave you and your kids ever wondered where stars come from? Logically we as adults know that stars are big exploding balls of gas (mostly hydrogen and helium) up in the sky, but wouldn’t it be neat if they were actually made of something more?

M.H. Clark, a Seattle author, weaves together a beautiful tale about a man who puts new stars in the sky every night. Where does he find them? In the goodness all around. When a little boy does something nice, he learns that extra kindness has a glow. That glow becomes a star. It is the man’s job to release them into the sky. But why is the man called the Man Made of Stars? Well maybe its because there is a little goodness (or star light) in all of us.

This tale isn’t only fascinating and teaches are children to dream a little past what science would have us believe about what makes up the heavens, but the illustrations are (let’s be cliche about it) out of this world. Lisa Evans, a British artist, brings together the colors of twilight and stardust to create a world more than one child (and adult) will want to walk into and never leave. My boys were fascinated with the little cat in the book that follows the boy into the woods to find the man made of stars. The detailed paintings draw you in with their warmth and color, making the mysterious man that glows not a thing to be scared of, but a man to want to know more about.

The next time you look up at the stars with your children, ask them where they think the stars come from. Clark lives near a star gazing great hill in Seattle. I bet she dreamed more than once about how they got there. Now your kids can too.

Publisher’s Synopsis: The man made of stars is hard at work every night, bringing more and more light to the world, bit by bit. But what is his secret, and where does he go every evening when he walks out past town with his lantern twinkling? This is the story of one curious child who, determined to come up with an answer to this mystery, discovers something incredible about himself. It is a reminder that small acts have great consequences, and that there is always room for more light in the world.
